Shanice: A Woman Living Her Dream
Shanice is a singer who has been a recording star for almost twenty years. She was
14 when her debut CD, Discovery, was released in 1997. She is now a woman who
is living her dream with her husband Flex, and her four year old daughter and two
year old son. She recently released Every Woman Dreams in a partnership Playtime
and her own label. She took time out her busy schedule to talk about her new CD,
Every Woman Dreams, her life and the future.
How long did it take to record Every Woman Dreams?
After I had my daughter, I started working on the CD actually four years ago. I
started writing, then we decided to have another child. So I kind of put things off
for a minute. Then after I had my son I finished up the album and then to finish up
the second half of the album, it took about two months..
How has motherhood changed your music?
It’s changed my music a whole because it helps my songwriting, because I have so
much more to talk about. I have kids now and a husband. I just have more to say
about life in general. When you have kids it totally matures you and not trip off of
little small things. I appreciate life even more I feel like my writing has matured a
whole lot.
How did you pick your first single off this CD?
Well I wanted to come back with a song that would speak directly to women. The
first single is called “Every Woman Dreams” and I wanted to talk to women
because I had a friend, who was with the wrong man and he murdered her. So I said
‘I know that there is a lot of women out there that feel that there is nothing out
there better for them” So they stay in a bad relationship thinking they will never get
anything else. I wanted to a song that would empower women to let them know
they don’t have to settle for that crap!
How would you describe the mood of this CD?
This CD is a love letter to my husband. There are a bunch of love songs. I have few
up tempo songs , a lot of mids and ballads. It is just about love and to help women.
You started your own label, how did that come about?
Well, I used to be on LaFace records and they put out my last album and after the
last album, I just felt that it was time for me to move on so I left the company.
During my time off, I was reading what the fans had to say on the internet and they
were really waiting for me to come back out. So my husband and I said ‘Why don’t
we start recording the album’ I wasn’t thinking about starting a label. ‘We’ll record
some songs and sell them to the fans over the internet., to the diehard fans who are
waiting for me to come back out. I got back in touch with Vida Nash, who used to
work with me at Motown and told her what we were planning on doing. And her
husband wanted to start his own label, so she was like “Why don’t we just do a
label together?” I was like “What a great idea!” So, that is how the whole thing
came about.
What do you enjoy about being an independent artist?
I love doing it this way because I can be how I am as an artist. I did not have a
major label telling me what my direction should be. I found some young guys called
PMG they gave me some tracks I went by myself with and engineer and the first
time in my whole career and just sing from my heart. I did not have a producer
telling me “You’re over singing” Or “Wait til the end of the song.” I just had so
much freedom. I feel that this is the first time the public is going to be able to see
who I am as an artist.
What do you hope people will feel when they hear this album
from you?
I hope people, especially women, will feel like that the right man is out there for
them. They don’t have to settle. I have two songs that talk directly about that.
That is so important to me after I lost my friend. Even through my experiences I
have settled in the past with my past relationships and I felt like if I would have
been patient and got into myself and learned how to love myself and waited for the
right man it would have been so much better. I want them to feel like Wow! I be
happy and I don’t have to be in a relationship. Relationships are good, just because
your not in one don’t feel like your life is over.
It sounds like you are very happy with your life right now.
I think this is the happiest I have ever been my whole life! I super super happy.
Back in the day I had my career, but I always wanted a family. I’ve always wanted
children. I’ve always wanted to be married. So now I feel like “Wow now it’s all
here!” It is exciting and now I am ready to get back out there with my music. I
happy I am getting another chance at it not everybody.
